Merrideth L. Okonkwor is a seasoned education leader, community advocate, and strategic relationship builder with more than 30 years of experience advancing educational opportunity and community impact across Michigan. Her career spans K-12 education, charter school oversight, higher education, workforce development, nonprofit engagement, and public service, providing her with a unique perspective on the systems and partnerships that help young people succeed.
Merrideth currently serves as a School Consultant with Grand Valley State University's Division of K-12 Excellence, Innovation & Scholar Success, where she supports charter school governance, accountability, performance evaluation, and continuous improvement efforts throughout Michigan. In this role, she works closely with school leaders and governing boards, contributes to high-stakes charter renewal evaluations, facilitates governance training, and helps drive data-informed decision-making that impacts thousands of students.
Prior to joining Grand Valley State University, Merrideth held leadership positions with Baker College, Pontiac School District, EverFi, Oakland University, and other educational organizations. She also served as Chief of Staff for the Wayne County Commission, where she collaborated with regional leaders and policymakers on issues affecting communities throughout Southeast Michigan. Her career began in the classroom as a teacher in one of Michigan's pioneering charter schools, an experience that continues to inform her student-centered approach to leadership.
Known for her collaborative style, strategic thinking, and deep commitment to service, Merrideth has built trusted relationships across Detroit and Southeast Michigan's education, nonprofit, business, and civic sectors. She is passionate about creating opportunities for children and families, strengthening communities, and supporting initiatives that empower young people to reach their full potential.
